because the Olympics is like a world cup in football so if someone wins it is like a world cup.and because if someone wins a gold medal they will know that they are good athletes and so will other people.

It all depends what year you are talking about but the reason why the Olympics are important is because it proves each contries strongest events and not as strong and it proves what country is the best. (I hope to be an Olympic swimer)
