When the team stayed at a hotel or ate at a restaurant he couldn't go there. The white team members treated him with rude and disrespectful comments. Many African Americans who step out and become the first to do something faced the same thing he did. Singer Sammy Davis Jr. in the 1960-70's couldn't stay at the Las Vegas hotel where he was the headline star. He had to stay off the strip.

The number 42 was worn by Jackie Robinson and is retired throughout major league baseball. Only older players, such as Mariano Rivera on the Yankees still wear the number 42 since they wore it before it was retired.
