Yes, the #42 was used up until the 1997 season when it was retired by MLB on the occasion of the 50th anniverisary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. Those that wore the #42 at the time were allowed to continue wearing it. As of the 2008 season, there is only one player in MLB wearing the number, that being Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees. Once Rivera retires no one else will ever wear the #42 in MLB.
