That depends. ESPN.com rates it as being harder than Surfing and Field Hockey but easier than soccer and Baseball.

With an average level of fitness and regular practice you could pick up the basics within a week or two and if you join a club you could be a good player within a few months.

You need to be a strong swimmer with good reactions and have strong arms to pass and shoot. At the top levels of competition, players tend to be taller than 6ft, well built and with big hands. If you are not a very sporty or fit person then you can still take part, as there are clubs catering for all levels of players, from total beginners to professionals as well as "Mini polo" for younger children.

YES it is very hard. When you've been playing non stop for the whold game about to puke your guts, all the while treading water and getting grabbed, punched kicked. yeah i consider it at the same level as Hockey and Football

Waterpolo is a violent sport as well. It has many dimensions that are not always shown in playing. Yes, you have to have some fitness to be able to swim the entire time and tread high, but you also have to be able to take punches and elbows and continue to play. I have played for almost 6 years, and for the past three i have been playing High School waterpolo. During the state Tournament in which my team took first, while i was playing holeset, i was dunked, knee-ed, kicked off of, punched, jabbed, and kicked in the nuts. I would consider waterpolo the same level of difficulty as football, if not a bit harder because there is no stopping until someone scores, but in terms of violence, it is a different violence than football.
