That depends. ESPN.com rates it as being harder than Surfing and Field Hockey but easier than soccer and Baseball.
With an average level of fitness and regular practice you could pick up the basics within a week or two and if you join a club you could be a good player within a few months.
You need to be a strong swimmer with good reactions and have strong arms to pass and shoot. At the top levels of competition, players tend to be taller than 6ft, well built and with big hands. If you are not a very sporty or fit person then you can still take part, as there are clubs catering for all levels of players, from total beginners to professionals as well as "Mini polo" for younger children.
YES it is very hard. When you've been playing non stop for the whold game about to puke your guts, all the while treading water and getting grabbed, punched kicked. yeah i consider it at the same level as Hockey and Football
Waterpolo is a violent sport as well. It has many dimensions that are not always shown in playing. Yes, you have to have some fitness to be able to swim the entire time and tread high, but you also have to be able to take punches and elbows and continue to play. I have played for almost 6 years, and for the past three i have been playing High School waterpolo. During the state Tournament in which my team took first, while i was playing holeset, i was dunked, knee-ed, kicked off of, punched, jabbed, and kicked in the nuts. I would consider waterpolo the same level of difficulty as football, if not a bit harder because there is no stopping until someone scores, but in terms of violence, it is a different violence than football.
Swimming is one of hardest sports in the world. I suggest starting at a young age (about 5) because starting at 10 years old like me left me in the dust compared to people who started when they were younger. When joining a team start slow and build as you go. Swimming is very hard. But, as time goes on while you are still hopefully practicing, it will become easier. Good Luck!
That's right!! i started a year ago (competitive i mean) and practice really gets you there!!! I practice Mon.-Fri. for 2 hours a day and have swim meets on the weekends. Yes, it seems like a lot and i don't excactly enjoy practicing that hard or much but it all seems worth it when i win another award!!!
Water polo is often compared to soccer because of the similar field set-up, with two goals, each at opposing ends of the pool. The main difference between water polo and soccer, besides that fact that water polo is played in the water, is the fact that you use your hands. Water polo is also compared to basketball a lot. The plays are similar, and there are many other similar aspects, such as the large amount of fast-breaks. but also in 1860's its kinda related to football but later on the years it change its way go to waterpolox.blogspot.com
The game of water polo was 1st played in the USA in 1888. It featured the old rugby style of play which looked like American football in the water. "American style" water polo became very popular and by the late 1890's was played in such places as Madison Square Garden and Boston's Mechanics Hall, attracting 14,000 spectators to the big national championship games.

Water Polo is so named because of its likeness to normal polo and the fact that it is played in water. In reality, it is more similar to Rugby but "water rugby" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

In 2013, 17 horses drowned in international water polo competition. This was the highest equine death toll since 1972, when 28 horses died in a single match (the so-called "death derby": Ecuador vs Trinidad and Tobago on July 23, 1972). It is very hard for horses to breathe underwater, even when they are given snorkels.
