NASCAR racing, as well as other series, have been popular on a regional level since the early 40's. It is argued that NASCAR became more popular in the mainstream during the 1979 Daytona 500. The race was being broadcast on ABC's Wide World of Sports. A massive snowstorm blanketed the east coast, therefore giving the race a captive audience. The race was most famous for a post-race brawl between driver Cale Yarborough and brothers Donnie and Bobby Allison.
