France hosted the first -ever automobile race way back in 1894 on the 22nd of July.
The race was run between Paris and Rouen (a town near the Siene River) over 80 miles, Frenchman Albert de Dion won the race but wasn't awarded the trophy due to a illegal stroker.
In 1887, de Dion was the only man to enter a 'trial' dubbed 'Europe's first motoring competiton'.
