The uneven bars are used for doing a complex routine (Olympics) or for levels, they are simply for moves that you get scored on from a 0.00-10.00. It is one of the 4 events that GIRL gymnasts compete on.

Gymnasts perform\compete at what is called a gymnastics meet, which is where gymnast in competitive gymnastics do a routine on every event (bars, beam, floor, and vault). Then once every gymnast has performed they have awards where gymnasts get placed by score in 1st through whatever place.
There is no requirement for the bars but they are generally 180cm apart. The gymnasts feet shouldn't be hitting the low bar while swinging on the high bar.
