This is out of a recent question that i answered and this should help you to understand the way it works. I will explain it to you in two parts. The first part being how they score routines and judge routines in levels 1-3 You start off with a start value usually being 5,6 or 7.The judges deduct points if: *You fall off the apparatus *You fault in any way *Bend your legs or arms when you are not meant to *Do not get enough height or dynamic in a particular skill *Do not perform the skill right *Don't use the right technique After the judges have decided how much points they will take from you they deduct it from 10.00.After they have done that (e.g they may end up with 8.65) then they add the start value (mentioned above). Then they end up with the final score. Secondly,in levels 4+ they do the same as in level 1-3 but you can perform bonus skills which earn you 0.2,0.4 or 0.6 more to your score.
I hope it helped as i am a gymnast.
