It depends on the country. Most Olympians are paid by their government. US Athlete's are not, in fact, US athletes are volunteers. They make money through sponsorships, endorsements, and in some sports prize money. Unfortunately that can add up to be a boatload of cash or not much at all depending on the sport and the individual athlete.
Most Olympic athletes do not get paid for winning at the Olympics. Many of the countries will pay the travel expenses of the athletes. Most athletes are sponsored and will receive bonus money from the sponsors for doing well or medaling at the Olympics.

Athletes do make to much money and I dont think that they should make this much.but then they do deserve it...
How much money do Olympic track and field athletes earn for setting a world record?
Olympic athletes are not paid to participate, or receive monetary rewards for medals awarded.
yes but not as much as america does
Clearly not enough.
That would depend on how much the athlete has
well the Olympic games make more money then how much they pay for it. thank goodness for tourist that love sport
Because the economy doesn't focus on mlb and how much money they make.
Nothing; most Olympic athletes make money from endorsement deals and other ways of trading on their fame such as book deals, television commentary, interviews, etc. Many, particularly in less popular sports have regular jobs, or are supported by their families.
The medal winners do not officially get a monetary reward from the Olympic committees. The award depends on the country's Olympic committee and the country's generosity. For example, one country may award a gold medalist with $10,000 whereas another country may award a gold medal with $50,000. Most athletes make their money through endorsement deals and sponsors.

"Overpaid" is an opinion in a Capitalist economy. Athletes are paid so highly because they are in very high demand, and the sport industries make a significant amount of money off of this demand. Because the industries make so much money, they pay as much as they can to attract the best players to play for their team, as most players are going to play for whoever offers them the most money. If society wanted to reduce athletes' pay, the way to do that would be to eliminate the demand of athletes and the industry would no longer profit.
