To protect their head.
This is a rather short answer. as it begs another question : Why only one player has the need to protect his head?
---- The cap (called a scrumcap) is normally worn by forwards specifically front rows and second rows to prtoect them during scrums. It prevents cauliflower ear (a common Wrestling injury) and just general pushing and squishing and pulling on the head and ear. It doesn't protect against concussion or other head and neck injuries much.
History has not recorded that information although it is known that a team in the 1860s called the Brooklyn Excelsiors wore caps that looked somewhat like today's caps in that they had a rounded top. There were no rules back then that stated players had to wear a cap so most did not wear one although some players would wear a straw hat with a large brim to shade their face from the sun.
You can, but most players don't. If the helmet is too big, wearing your cap under it is a good way to make it fit better though.
Bessie Coleman usually wore long pants with a white t-shirt (her airplane wear) When she went flying, she wore a cap and goggles.
The cap colouration/symbol designate what unit they're from.
MLB because there isn't a Cap on how much teams can spend on any one player.
You may wear a scrum cap and at some levels, you may wear soft shinguards.
Most rugby players wear shoulder pads, which protects them when they tackle and for when they are in a scrum or ruck. The players who go in the scrums and rucks wear scrum hats, this prevents them from head injuries, but also prevents cauliflower ears. And nearly all the players wear gum shields to protect their teeth.
Hat
there are no helmets in rugby only in american football. that is why rugby is so brutal and why players wear tape around their ears to stop them getting ripped off. there is only one "helmet" which is a scrum cap which is used like the tape to stop their ears being ripped off
because they want to look hot for the girls ___________________________________________________________ Because players are tackled by manually holding the opposing player it was seen as a strategic move to reduce the leg length of the shorts to limit the material that could be used to retrain the opposing player. In 2007 new shirts were developed and first worn by Wales where the materiel allowed the players skin to "breath" thus reducing desperation and dehydration The shirts were made of a more elastic material than the previous thick cotton worn around the world. This again made the amount of materiel difficult to grasp in a tackle Also, in rugby union, some players are lifted into the air by their shorts. Thus, it is very important that the shorts not be too baggy (making them prone to tearing or just not being useful for lifting).
Shirt, shorts, socks boots. Perhaps a scrum cap and a mouth guard. Some wear regulation body armour as well.
The only head gear allowed is either a scum cap, which is made of a soft sponge like material or a head band normally made of adhesive bandage. The IRB do not allow hard helmets as in some other sports. There is NO regulation making the wearing of scrum caps obligatory

The pay depends on the level of Rugby. In the USA the game is amatuer I think so the domestic players are not paid. In the Pro Leagues in Europe for example they are paid less than soccer players with good players getting between 50000 and 100000 pounds a year to play. Extra money comes from sponsorship and a salary cap paid to international players along with any bonuses from club or country.
The player, himself, decides what hat will be worn.
That's how the creation of the game got about. ~ When heavy body armour was introduced to American Football the heat protection was a leather helmet similar to the scrum cap used in rugby. When the hard protection was introduced they had to add extra hard head-wear as the injuries to the face from the shoulder padding cause serious injury. Rugby boards are desperately trying to maintain a flexible body armour, which in effect reduces stud damage to the skin whilst not being made in such a way as to be used to increase tackle effectiveness.
Salary cap was inducted with the beginning of superleague, so 1996
