The baseball cap was originally invented in Europe somewhere in the west. The first baseball caps had a strap of cow hide to keep them on. It is thought that they were first made in the 1890's.
For games on July 4 weekend, Major League Baseball Clubs will wear special "Stars & Stripes" caps, which have the American flag etched into the team's logo and are off-white in color with red or blue brims (the Toronto Blue Jays hat will incorporate a Maple Leaf design instead of the "Stars & Stripes"). Major League Baseball Properties will donate 100% of the proceeds it receives from the sale of the caps to Welcome Back Veterans, a program which addresses the needs of returning American Veterans and their families.
Fitted caps, as we know them today, began to gain popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly with Major League Baseball teams. They were designed to fit the wearer's head size without an adjustable strap, providing a sleek, streamlined look. The New Era Cap Company, which started producing caps in 1920, played a significant role in popularizing fitted caps, especially with its introduction of the iconic 59FIFTY model in 1954. Over the decades, fitted caps have evolved into a staple in both sports and street fashion.

It keeps the sweat out of their eyes. Football players sweat a lot under those helmets and when they take them off, it will roll into their eyes. Some guys wear the skull caps under their helmets for the same reason, and so that their helmet doesn't pull their hair out when they take it off.
