Referees regulate the game. There are 2 sideline referees whose purpose is to call off sides and watch for any pushing or shoving that the center ref may not be able to see. They make the decision on who gets the ball after it goes out. The central referee determines if he/she needs to card any players for unnecessary roughness or blatant fouls. They also make sure that players don't break the rules such as handballs, tripping players, and pulling on jerseys. There is one other official who verifies who is being substituted and the amount of extra time to be added.
