∙ 14y agoThe publication "Kings of the Ice - A History of World Hockey" reports the first ever organized hockey game played( meaning ON ICE) was in Nova Scotia Canada in 1865. The natives in Nova Scotia played a version of the old English game hurling which was renaimed Hockey for the British officer that invented the modified version of the game known originally as Hurling.
According to this publication the only way a game using these rules could be classified as hockey was that it had to be played ON ICE.

Hockey is one of the national sports in Canada. The first organized game was played indoors on March 3, 1875.
The game of ice hockey probably evolved from the game of field hockey that was played in Northern Europe for hundreds of years. The modern version of ice-hockey finds its origins in the rules laid down by a Canadian named J G Creighton. His rules were implemented in the first game of ice hockey played in Montreal, Canada in the year 1875.
Although modern-day field hockey did have its origins in Britain, the game of ice hockey was first played by British troops in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, as a variation of field hockey... The first game was played by the troops on ice with field hockey sticks and a round ball.In 1825 Sir John Franklin (while on Great Bear Lake during one of his Arctic expeditions) wrote: "The game of hockey played on the ice was the morning sport."And in 1843, a British Army officer in Kingston, Ontario, wrote: "Began to skate this year, improved quickly and had great fun at hockey on the ice."
