Basketball was invented by James Naismith who was a physical education teacher at the International Training School of the Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) in Springfield, Mass on December 1st, 1891. He started the game using two peach backets with the bottoms cut out as what we now call nets. He needed a way to keep the young men fit during the cold winter months.
