There was no year in which the World Series was a best out of nine games however there were years in which the World Series was a best out of eight games and one of those years occurred in 1903 with the Boston Americans beating the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates in eight game and the only other instance of the series being more than 7 games was in 1912 when the New Giants had lost to the Boston Red Sox in 8 games with Game 2 ending up as a tied game since it had been called due to darkness and was not resumed.

For almost "forever" the major league World Series played in a best of seven games format. In the years of 1919, 1929 and 1921 the Series was the best of nine games.
