Browns Browns
The St. Louis Cardinals never played in the American League. They originated in 1882 in the American Association as the St. Louis Brown Stockings. The following season they shortened the name to Browns. After ten years in the AA they joined the National League as the Browns in 1892. Back during those days there was a thing called 'syndicate ownership' where one person or group could own more than one team. The owners of the Cleveland Spiders, Frank and Stanley Robison, bought the Browns prior to the 1899 season. They moved their best players from the Spiders to the Browns and their 'worst' players from the Browns to the Spiders. They also changed the name of the team from Browns to Perfectos for the 1899 season and made the team color cardinal red. This led sportswriters to give the team the nickname of Cardinals and the name was changed to from Perfectos to Cardinals in 1900.
