There have been two MLB franchises in St. Louis history. The St. Louis Cardinals of the national league have existed continuously since 1892 and prior to that were an American Association (league now defunct) club called the St. Louis Browns, a name they kept until 1898 before spending 1899 as the "Perfectos". Confusingly enough, The current Baltimore Orioles were the "St. Louis Browns" of the American League from 1902-1953 (after spending 1901 in Milwaukee as the original "Brewers" franchise) The history of the American League St. Louis Browns was largely a dismal one. They captured just one AL pennant, in 1944. Even this was due largely to the effect of WWII on MLB rosters which left numerous teams with patchwork rosters of over-the-hill veterans, inexperienced youngsters and career minor leaguers. Their opponents in that year's World Series were none other than the crosstown rival Cardinals, who dispatched them in six games. By 1953, the team was economically unable to compete and amid dwindling attendance, MLB approved their sale and relocation to Baltimore as The Orioles (where they found considerable success)... The Browns, in 52 AL seasons, finished above the .500 mark only 12 times The Cardinals, on the other hand, have had far more success. They have won 11 World Championships and 19 NL Pennants in 26 overall playoff appearances. They most recently won a World Series in 2011. They also won 4 American Association pennants. Overall, only the New York Yankees have been World Champions more times.
