30.. He was not going to wear 34 like he did at Maryland as many people think..
He did wear #27 for 3 or 4 exhibition games and was pictured once with that number. No always number 4. He might have worn 30 before the Bruins and then when he got called up to play for them the number might have been taken already. I have him in a picture and a Boston sweater #30 so what was that about?

Most NFL players use Riddell. Most NFL players do not use Riddell helmets...60% of the NFL wear a model of Schutt helmet, however you will never see the name Schutt on the field as Riddell has rights to onfield name placement.
It is quite rare that you will see forwards wearing numbers 1-8 or defenseman who wear numbers 9-28. Goalies traditionally wear the number 1 or numbers in the 30's, but there are exceptions, as it is not a written rule. In minor hockey and junior hockey teams players are restricted to only a few jersey numbers, usually 1-31. Most defensemen are restricted to numbers 2-8, while the forwards can choose from number 9-29. The numbers 1, 30, and 31 are usually reserved for goaltenders. It's not related to their positions as it is in football. Players can wear any number from 1-98 nowadays.
Football numbers can range from 1-99. The numbers identify positions, so position payers have a range of uniform numbers they can be assigned. Quarterback can wear numbers 1-9, 10-19 Running Back can wear numbers 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 H-Back can wear numbers 40-49, 80-89 Wide Receiver can wear numbers 10-19, 80-89 Tight End can wear numbers 40-49, 80-89 Offensive Line can wear numbers 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 Defensive Line can wear numbers 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 Linebacker can wear numbers 50-59, 90-99 Corner back can wear numbers 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 Safety can wear numbers 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 Kicker can wear numbers 1-9 Punter can wear numbers 1-9 While this system went into place in 1973, exceptions can be made. The jersey number is assigned based in a players primary position However, if they change positions, they usually are not required to change numbers. In addition, the NFL will allow some players to use a number that is not in their position specified range. However, the Player has to pay a "fine" for the privilege.
