Belt types vary greatly between styles and schools. When I hear black red belt, there are two possibilities.
A red belt with a black strip running the length of the belt. This is typically in the low kyu ranges in some styles, something about 3rd or 4th kyu, almost brown belt.
The entire belt alternating between black and red in striped sections that are about a foot long. I've seen this used to represent 5th and 6th degree black belts.
Usually these are refered to as "dan." Shodan = 1st degree, Nidan = 2nd degree, Sandan = 3rd degree, etc.
