There are four.
Three main and one alternate. It's a relay.
Each team consists of a minimum of three fencers, with the option of a fourth fencer
designated as the substitute. The fencers on one team in a match are numbered 1-3; the opposing fencers are numbered 4-6. Each slot on a team competes against the three opposing slots (9 relays).
The bouts of each team match are fenced in the following order: 3-6, 5-1, 2-4, 6-1, 3-4, 5-2, 1-4, 6-2, 3-5. The placing of each team on the score sheet (i.e. 1-3 or 4-6) is initially
determined by coin toss, then the order of the fencers is specified by the team captains.
Each bout is three minutes and to five touches, if the score does reach an increment of five, the next bout is fenced to the next increment of five to a total of 45 points (touches). For example: first bout is over at 1:4, the next one goes to 10. That means one fencer has a chance to catch up.
Team matches a re a lot of fun.
