In the earliest days of American football, a "touchdown" required that the ball physically touch the ground beyond the goal line. This requirement was removed from the rules in 1889, but the name stuck.

∙ 15y agoThe name comes from Rugby. In that sport, when a player advances the ball into his opponent's end zone, he has to physically touch the ball down to the ground for the score to count. Football originally used the same rule but abandoned it in the early 20th century while retaining the terminology.

== == == == When the ball is advanced past the end zone line it is called a touchdown. It is worth 6 points. A touchdown can be scored on offense or defense by any player. A touchdown can also be scored if there is a fumble in the end zone, and the team that scored on that end zone recovers the fumble.

It's Called a PAT (Point After Try I believe) it's a kick after the touchdown, a touchdown is only 6 points to get the full 7 you have to kick a PAT, or you can go for a 2 point conversion worth.....2 POINTS obviously
