The job description of an athlete is someone who competes, usually for money in pre arranged games of a certain sport. They may also make personal appearances or be required to attend other functions.
An athlete, contrary to popular opinion, does not have to be physically fit. For instance, Shaquille O'Neal is an athlete, and one of the best centers in NBA history, but he is not that athletic at all. The same can go for most football players who play on the offensive or defensive line, or for some Baseball players.
An athlete is:
1) A person who practices and competes in sports; a sportsperson
2) A person who practices and competes in Track and Field
3) A person who can perform arduous tasks without fatigue
4) A person who has great physical capabilities, i.e. superior stamina, strength, speed, etc.
