When you are swimming it depends what you are swimming to pace yourself and what your body can handle. For example: When you swim a 200 you should always sprint the third 50 because that is where most people get tired. Also, it also depends on the length of the event. When you swim a 1000 you should sprint the first and last 200, and in the middle you should change paces depending on the way that your body feels.

Why it is important to pace during aerobic activity?

If you don't pace yourself, you will get tired near the end of your race. Those who do pace themselves will have more energy at the end and will pass you up. Only pace yourself in 200s and longer. If you are capable of sprinting a 200 then you do not need to pace.
