For most dancers, they start dancing around 3 or 4. Although, many start later (7-8). In order to get into a Ballet academy, in the hope of becoming a professional, normally you have to be under 12 years old. These strict age limits are to ensure that the dancer has enough time to develop using good technique. Despite this common barrier in the ballet world, many professional dancers have become famous, having started ballet late in life. For example, Misty Copeland started ballet at the age 13 in a girls and boys club. But, keep in mind, most of these dancers had all the right characteristics to succeed, ie good feet, flexible, mental focus, lean body structure and passion! So, overall, if you want a chance to becoming a professional dancer (assuming everything else works out), you should probably start at the latest age of 8. Some others may say earlier or later. Ballet academies will have different opinions, but it is never too late to start dancing simply for the joy of it! :)
