From Don Oberloh....The above answer is close though rather simplistic......
The family name of Daito came from Takeda, Kunitsugu, who while serving the Aizu clan in 1574, changed his name to Daito because of his brother Takeda, Shingen, being on the loosing side of a civil war. Daito Ryu Aiki-no-jutsu has never been a BUDO, but rather a BUGEI, an martial art designed to dispatch an enemy. The plebeian arts developed after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 are called Shin Budo, or BUDO. Prior to the name change Takeda was used and before that the Genryu lineage. The spirit and codification of Daito Ryu ancestors falls back to Minamoto no Yoshitmitsu as mentioned above.

Takeda Ryu Aikijutsu basically is a questionable system claiming to be connected and descended from a separate branch of the Takeda Family. There historical claims are spotty at best and to most seem far fetched. The only known surviving Takeda Ryu-ha are the mounted/ horse archery Kyujutsu line and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.
Aikido came from Daito Ryu JiuJitsu, so Jiujitsu is what came first.
