Melbourne (where they race left-handed, or counter-clockwise)
Why does some states race clock-wise and other states race counter-clockwise? I was once told that it may go back to the goldrush when Americans came here. Americans run their horses in the opposite direction to the English and some states stayed with the English way and some like Victoria where there were a lot of American miners adopted the American way. Not sure if it is true or not but at least it seems plausible.

A quarter horse can run any length. They are best known for their ability to cover a quarter mile quickly. Well, I do not know the whole detail to this question but can give some insight. The reason why baseball players run the bases counter clockwise along with NASCAR, INDY, horse racing, dogs, running counter clockwise etc., has a lot to do with the American Revolution. Early Americans hated the British so much they wanted to do almost eveything opposite to their rules. In England and Europe, they run car and horse races clockwise, and I think Cricket runs clockwise as well, although they do not have a diamond like American Baseball. Hope that helps!
Horse racing can be watched at the Albion Park in Gold Coast, Queensland Australia. There is an official website called Racing Queensland that is full of information.
Horses are raced both clockwise and counterclockwise in Australia. The decision to run horses counterclockwise in the US dates to the American Revolution era. In 1780, the first circular US race track was established by William Whitley near his home in Lincoln County, Kentucky. A staunch supporter of the Revolution, Whitley insisted that horses race counterclockwise, as opposed to clockwise as was the custom at the time in England. Some but not all American tracks followed the change immediately. Belmont was run clockwise from its opening until 1921. Today about 30% to 40% of English horse racing is now counterclockwise like all horse racing in the US.
