Warm-up activities gradually increase the heart rate which in turn increases blood flow, carrying additional oxygen to the muscles prior to vigorous activity.

The gradual increase in heart rate also reduces the possibility of a sudden increase (spike) in blood pressure which could be dangerous for someone with already high blood pressure or someone with a heart defect or aneurysm, a weakened area in the wall of an artery.
