The first weightlifting events in the Modern Olympics took place at the 1896 Games in Athens. Events were held in the two hand lift (similar to clean and jerk) and one hand lift. Events were also held at the 1904 Games. Weightlifting became a constant Olympic event starting in 1920.
The first Olympic gold medal in weightlifting was won by Viggo Jensen of Denmark in two-handed lift at the 1896 Games in Athens. The event consisted of lifting a barbell with two hands. Jensen and Launceston Elliot of Great Britain both lifted 111.5 kg (245.8 pounds) but Jensen was awarded the gold on the basis of the 'style' of his lift, which was the rule for breaking ties. Elliot was awarded the silver medal and Sotirios Versis of Greece won bronze.
Nick Scott became disabled from a car accident when he was just 16 years old. Afterwards he went back to weight lifting after a bout of feeling sorry for himself. He won his first weight lifting award in 2001 before his accident.
