well nfl nba and mlb are a lot more popular in the usa but at its time about 3 or 4 years right before the econmy crashed badly it used to be called the fastest growing sport if you ask me now i think its soccer in the usa least in nascar they move a lot

It is argued that NASCAR became more popular in the mainstream during the 1979 Daytona 500. The race was being broadcast on ABC's Wide World of Sports. A massive snowstorm blanketed the east coast, therefore giving the race a captive audience. The race was most famous for a post-race brawl between driver Cale Yarborough and brothers Donnie and Bobby Allison.
