The last time Chelsea were promoted to the First Division (Premier) was 1989. They had been relegated the year before in a play off game.
Previously they had been promoted in 1977 and 1984 after relegation in 1975 and 1979.
In 1962/63 they also spent one season in Division 2 gaining promotion the year after Liverpool!
If that seems unlikely, when Chelsea went down in 1975 Manchester United were promoted and when Chelsea went up in 1977, Spurs went down in the opposite direction. That year Nott's Forest were promoted too and went on to win the League the next year and the European Cup the 2 years after.
