Considdering you skate on ice..... it needs to be cold, -5 is perfect becasue there's ice... and it's not too cold for the skaters.
You can skateboard anytime except in the winter if you live in an area with a lot of snow but if you don't then skate all year round. Obviously Its best to skate in Summer because its hot but I actually prefer Spring or Fall because the weather is cool and its just right.

No. It certainly helps alot... but there are plenty of "heavy set" people who speed skate.

The recreational skate is not designed for the speeds that the figure skate is. It is a "crossover" between the figure skate and the hockey skate. It is not designed to be as precise in turnings and stops as the figure skate. However, if you do not wish to invest in figure skates for the novice (just in case it's another whim) recreational skates are a good option. The novice learns to skate and has fun without the expense of the professional skate.
