Unless you're in water, knowing how to swim isn't useful. But if you end up in deep water, swimming will suddenly be very, very useful. Your life may even depend on it.
Either you can swim, or you can't. Swimming is done close to the Surface of the water. How deep it is doesn't really matter once you can't touch bottom.

Well, I guess you could jump in the water and hope that luck is on your side. luck doesn't have much to do with it. unless you are "lucky" enough to have someone nearby to save your silly self. look up swimming videos on youtube etc watch how they do it get used to the water - in the shallow end of the pool go under the water - learn to hold your breath learn to float on your back - or tread water if you sink try dog-paddle breast-stroke back-stoke side-stoke free style-stroke have fun Go to a lake and go as deep as you can. They are to inform the swimmer how deep the water is. It is always good to know the depth for safety reasons. It is not a good idea to dive into a 3 foot deep pool.
