You have to go to a licensed field and rent equipment. You MUST have a paintball specific mask to play. No welding helmets, riot helmets, sunglasses, air soft goggles, ski goggles, ballistic goggles, Only paintball specific masks. Other then that, many people just play in jeans and a tshirt.
Paintball gear is what keeps you safe in paintball. The mask is the only truly crucial piece you need to play paintball (meaning you can walk onto a field without a gun, or tank or paint).

Paintball is probably too advanced for children under 7. However you shouldn't let any child play unsupervised, especially if they don't have the proper safety gear.
If it is a matter of cost, you have to weight how much fun you have with paintball vs how much more it costs, and if you have the time to play either. If it is not, you should play both.
Whichever you will use more. If your hunting season is close, or you want to shoot clay's often, get a shotgun. If you would play paintball more then that, get a paintball marker.
