Gene Woodling...he played for the Yanks in 1949 through the early 50's and then played for the Mets on the woeful '62 team (as a 39 year old).
The first regular season game was April 17, 1964 when the Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets lost 4-3.
The Polo Grounds was the home of the New York Mets for the 1962 and 1963 season.
The player who was on both the 1969 and 1986 World Series roster for the New York Mets was Ed Kranepool. Kranepool made his debut with the Mets in 1962 and was a member of the 1969 "Miracle Mets" team that won the World Series. He remained with the Mets throughout his career and was still on the team in 1986 when they won their second World Series title. Kranepool's longevity with the Mets allowed him to be a part of both championship teams.
That is just the way major league baseball makes the schedule. In 2010, the Yankees started on the road and the Mets started at home.
