The story of Soccer starts in 19th century when public schools and universities in England made various attempts to standardise the rules of football which has been played in the UK for hundreds of years. The reason they wanted to standardise the rules was so that when games were played between different educational establishments both teams would be playing by the same rules. One of these schools was Cambridge University who drafted their first rules in 1846 and again in 1848. Further revisions were made in the 1856 and again in 1863 when the fledgling Football Association used them as a basis for the 'Laws of the Game' of Association Football wrote by the Football Associations first secretary Ebenezer Cobb Morley. The word 'Soccer' started as a contrived vernacular abbreviation used by public schools for the word 'Association' taken from the sports full title 'Association Football' also abbreviated to simply football. The word Soccer has since become a dictionary word in its own right.

Soccer as a word and as a form of football was created in19th centaury England. The word soccer is an abbreviation of 'Association' taken from the name of the sports creators the 'Football Association' (1863). The 'Laws of the game' were wrote by E.C. Morley, the first secretary of the F.A., who was influenced by the Cambridge Rules (1848) which in turn were based on earlier forms of football played in medieval England and Western Europe. When the majority of Western Europe formed part of the Roman Empire the Romans are known to have played a form of football called 'Harpastum'. This was based on an earlier ball game created by the Ancient Greeks called 'Episkyros' or 'Phaininda'. Episkyros was played as early as 2000 B.C. and is the earliest known ball game which fits the definition of football. The Chinese created a form of football 1500 years later independently of the Greeks called 'Cuju' which spread to Japan. However, the evidence suggests that along with other Olympic Games football originated in Ancient Greece and has evolved over 4000 years to become for runner of all the football games that stem from Europe. For this reason the image of an Ancient Greek Episkyros player was placed on the UEFA European Cup.
