In swimming there are many events (e.g. 1500m freestyle, 200m breastroke, 400m individual medley) and different people win gold medals for each event. Michael Phelps won the gold medals and either China or USA won the overall team standings for swimming.

"Normal" swimming is usually considered to be individual lap swimming or individual or relay competition and is one of the four racing strokes: Front crawl(or freestyle), butterfly, breastroke, or backstroke. Each of these can be perfected by preset standards. Another "normal" stroke may be elementary backstroke but it is a resting stroke and not in any competition. Synchronized swimming consists of a team that works together to invent a routine based on the standard moves.

No, swimming itself is not. However, there are swimming teams.
Depends... how old is the person? what stroke are they swimming? are they trained? personally, i am a teenage girl who has been on swim team her whole life and if i swim freestyle for a 25 my time is about 15-20 seconds
If it is a beginners team, than yes. But if it is a competitive team that you are aiming for, you should study up on the Butterfly, Backstroke, and Breaststroke. Most library's have books about swimming. Also, go onto an online search engine such as Google and search diagrams on how to do each stroke.
