yeahh it is necessary, not wearing a girdle leaves your hips open to helmets and anything else, the hip or side is a very frequent spot where the football player will take a hit by a helmet, plus landing on your side after getting hit or jumping for a ball is alot less painful if you have your girdle w/hip pads on. It also helps to keep your thigh pads in place if your girdle has pad pockets in them which i have found is a lot easier.

Hands down Cuzz Athletics. It is the most comfortable and protective football girdle on the market. The built in jock is great. I've worn both the padded and regular and like the padded for practice and the regular for more full-out playing.
It all.depends on the girdle the one I was given for football at my school didn't have one but it all depends on the type of girdle even if the girdle has a cup spot it is still best to wear a jock strap. a jock strap helps prevent movement
Some people put their thigh pads in their girdle, while others put them inside their football pants. If you have a girdle, I recommend putting them in that. But if you don't have a girdle, just put them in your pants.

Take out all the pads and then wash the girdle just like any other clothing. When done put the pads back in the right pockets.
The girdle goes on first as it will usually have the hip and butt pads. The tights go on the outside because they're longer and have more exterior padding.
Some football pants have pads that are attached to your belt. But a girdle helps keep your pads in place, especially when you get hit hard. Think about it!
