The main role for the shooting guard is to either defend or score. The role for a shooting guard really depends on what each team needs. If a team only needs a good defender, most likely the shooting guard will be a defender rather than a scorer. Some examples: Ray Allen. One of the best 3 point shooters in NBA history, and a good shooting guard. Another example: Doug Christie. Played for the 2001-2002 Sacramento Kings, he provided the main defense for the team along with the occasional 3 pointer or dunk. Another example: Dwyane Wade. A premier scorer in the NBA, this is usually the main example of a shooting guard; a player who takes over games with great scoring ability, can shoot the three ball, and can get to the basket at will.

One key role of the shooting guard is to provide a scoring threat from the perimeter to spread the defense and may be called upon to score three pointers on a critical possession. Some shooting guards will function as defensive specialists offering minimal scoring. I believe a Ray Allen is a model shooting guard worthy of mentioning because of his shooting ability which he complements with some rebounding and passing.
