Tai Chi. Although it seems like a bunch of old people do it for fitness, it is indeed "effective" in other ways.
Most traditional martial arts include an emotional and a physical change. They teach self-discipline and respect, which I imagine you are referring to as 'internal'. All martial arts offer a physical development of skills, understanding and ability. Basically all martial arts have an internal and external aspect to them. The balance between the two is critical to being a good martial artist. Many arts stress one side or another, but they cannot exist alone. It is the whole Yin/Yang or hard/soft combination that works so well.

The Taoists are given credit for creating Tai Chi Chuan which is an internal martial arts style. The Taoists use martial arts in a very similar way to the Buddhists of Shaolin Temple. That is that the Taoists use the martial arts as a form of moving meditation, a method for cultivating chi, a way to keep their bodies in good physical condition, and they generally practice Tai Chi Chuan in order to teach themselves how to live and move more in harmony with Tao.
Certain styles of karate and kung fu, (Examples of traditional martial arts) might not be as effective or as good in a fight as practical martial arts, but they still develop strength, speed, power, co-ordination, balance and inner peace. If you are looking for traditional martial arts i would recommend Shotokan karate, Wing Chun or Aikido. The most practical (street fighting) system of Kung Fu is Wing Chun. It concentrates on short effective movements and develops extreme speed and power. So some traditional martial arts do work in a real fight!
Martial arts have several benefits. The first is obviously physical. In martial arts, people move around, work a lot on cardio and just overly is a good form of physical exercise. Mental: In martial arts, everything one learns is not simply something to practice: one must reflect upon the teachings of their teacher. Martial arts, especially form based ones of kung fu, karate, etc. require a lot of internal reflection, and self-correction, meaning although it can bea group activity, it requires ou to look inside of yourself. Spiritual: many martial arts dojo do meditation, and meditation is simply closing your eyes, and breathing, wherein one may relax their spirit, and think attentively. Certainly. It does not only help people to be physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well.
Good teaching skills, a lot of dedication and time spent training. It is very difficult to earn a living as a martial arts instructor or competitor.
