Football games are that family of games which involve two teams playing on a rectangular field each of whom tries to score points by moving a ball beyond a goal line at the end of the field. In all forms of the game, points can be scored by kicking a ball between two posts. In all forms of the game, the players cannot move the ball with sticks, bats or other implements--they must only use their bodies. There are three main families: (1) soccer football, the most popular sport in the world, where the player may not use his hand to move the ball, (2) Rugby football, including Australian rules, league and union rugby, where the ball may be picked up and carried, but not passed forward, and (3) North American football including American Football and Canadian Football, where forward passing is permitted under special circumstances. This is the most static and least fluid form of the game.

All cultures everywhere and at all points in history have had some form of ball game where the ball is kicked around. The earliest recognizable form of soccer football was developed at English public schools in the 16th and 17th centuries. Rugby football developed at certain public schools (including Rugby obviously) around 1830. North American football was introduced by students from McGill University, Montreal, to the students of Harvard. The game was then very much a rugby type game. Rule changes introduced by Yale coach Walter Camp in 1880 included the concept of gaining ten yards in a certain number of downs, a peculiar feature of the North American game. The legal forward pass was introduced in 1905.
