Practice, practice, PRACTICE. Also what helped me was practicing everything to music that had a strong rhythmic beat to it....really! Experience is important. Chances to spar with those that are better than you should never be turned down. I cherish every bruise I got, for every one was a learning experience. And practice the basic moves, not the showy ones.

Sparring is sparring. I do Zen9 Martial Arts Australia. I am a black belt in that and Zen Chi Ryu. I've been doing Mixed Martial Arts for 7 years now and as far as I know it is the same. A controlled practice fight where you show off your technique and moves for judges or for practice.
