The only equipment you need for a relay is a baton to pass, and starting blocks, if you are doing a sprint relay.
Generally used for starting the races of longer distance (800m and up) as opposed to starting with blocks, which is what most sprinters use to get off the ground and get out fast

The starting position
Basically, the runners start as a crowd, not as individuals in lanes with starting blocks. Everybody lines up at the start, and they are all released at once.
The 200 meter race is a sprint race with starter blocks. The participants go around half the distance of the track.
