At a tryout for a semipro team Young threw some pitches that the catcher was unable to handle. Those pitched balls wound up splintering the wooden backstop behind home plate. Someone remarked that the backstop looked like it had been hit by a cyclone. The name stuck and for the first two years of his career Young was known as Cyclone and not Cy.
