1. ALWAYS be positive. Attitude is key, especially in a team-oriented sport such as Cheerleading. And yes, cheerleading is a sport. 2. Hydrate. You WILL pass out or become very ill if you dont drink enough water. 3. Keep yourself clean, no one wants to stunt with a smelly flyer, base, or backspot. 4. Don't just stretch during practice, stretch at home, and go running as much as you can. 5. Whatever you are working on whether it be tumbling, stunting, or motions, you need to stay tight. Flyers- always be squeezing your booty!

Practice, practice, practice. Cheerleading is a sport that gets better and better with practice. It helps to practice in front of a mirror to see what you need to work on. Be sure of the following things:

  • YOUR MOTIONS ARE TIGHT. No spaghetti arms, hands in fists or blades, tight knees, no bent wrists, quick, sharp motions.
  • JUMPS: When doing jumps, be sure to have straight and tight legs, pointed toes, keep your head and torso up, tight arms- no arms flying everywhere, and don't loose balance on the landing. When landing, land on your toes and roll down off of your toes to reduce the noise and avoid risk of ankle injuries.
  • CHEERING: Project your voice. Don't scream, and don't whisper. You should be getting the air from your stomach and cheering from there. have good motions while cheering.
  • DANCING: Same as cheering. Sharp and tight motions, enthusiasm, facials...
  • TUMBLERS: Get a good, clean (not sloppy) running start, pointed toes and straight legs, don't loose balance on the landing.
  • FLYERS: It's important to have good abdonimal strength to maintain balance. To practice, get two chairs and practice staying in the set position to work on upper body strength and to get used to the feeling of the set.
  • BASES AND BACKSPOTS: Get used to being able to catch people and to brace yourself for the fall. also work on leg strength because that's where the power comes from.
  • SMILE SMILE SMILE!!!!! Nobody likes a dead cheerleader. Have good facial expressions, enthusiasm, and be happy!!!!!

First, you shouldn't be scared at all going up or going down. It actually feels nice. Also, keep everything stiff (straight) and knees locked. Smile big in the air!

DONT BE SCARED! if you're scared, you won't be tight, and you bases will have a harder time lifting you. just stay tight and dont look down!
