they are suppose to strenghten your legs, but you have to be careful doing them because if you extend your knee past your ankle it is bad for your knees.

you start with just simple ballet flats, usually made from canvas. can be split soled. then you progress to demi pointe's which help to build up ankle support and get you used to the feeling of boxes and then pointe's. very hard! :)
Ballet is only painful when you turn your feet out to much, or are trying to lift your leg higher. Sometimes it can hurt if one knee or ankle is growing faster than the other. That tends to happen a lot to dancers, at least in my class.
