Depending on what sport and who and how much they get paid.
outside of the very elite athletes, e.g Usain Bolt (who gets lots from sponsorship), no, most have to have other jobs. basically almost everyone from the Olympics gets a reasonable fee, but most will have to work after their careers, but outside of that top bracket, all will work after and during!
Professional athletes get paid obscene amounts of money. With collective bargaining, most of them, even a lowest paid members of the team are considered upper class. Let's face it, if you took $2 million and put it in reasonable investments, you could have $100,000 a year for the rest of your life. These guys are getting paid a lot more than that! And we won't talk about how much the owners of the teams get paid. I think there ought to be a cap on all player salaries.

Yes, some people do believe that athletes get paid too much. In fact, there are some athletes that earn well over $100 million a year. While they should be paid for entertaining the masses and putting their health on the line, some athletes are simply not worth this amount of money.
The only country in the world who's athletes don't get paid.
