All race horses have to be retired some time but Stallions are usually retired to stud after they are clearly past their best racing point or they become to valuable to race. Some studs like Cigar the past most richest race horse (before Curlin won over 10 million) come up infertal and are put as pasture horses that calm horses that are just retired off the track to be in pastures.
