A man named Ban Johnson bought a minor league club called the western league in the late 1800's. At the time the national league was the only major league baseball organization. In 1900 ban Johnson changed the name to the American league. They were still a minor league organization but Johnson, trying to change that started buying national league players with promises of better pay.
