In 1900 ban Johnson changed the name to the American league. They were still a minor league organization but Johnson, trying to change that started buying national league players with promises of better pay. By 1903 with the national league struggling, the men in charge of the national league finally agreed to let Ban Johnson's American league compete with the national league in a separate but equal league
