To have fun. Foolish question.
There is no reason for the creation of the snowboard. An 8th grader back in the 50s created one in his shop class, and he started to make more and sell more. *It all started with the Snurfer in 1965, this guy sherman poppen created it for his daughter when she stood up on her sled. Snowboarding itself was influenced by Surfing and Skateboarding. Burton was one of the main brands in the beginning and is still the largest today. If you want more info just check out the wikipedia page for snowboarding and the snurfer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowboarding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snurfer
The snurfer really started it all. this dude sherman poppen created it when his 11 year old daughter stood up on a sled. That's how it got started. It got big when kids/people wanted to rebel against skiing. You can find a lot of information online all you have to do is look for it.
The invention of the snowboard followed the inventions of the skateboard and surfboard. For obvious reasons (different trick possibilities than on skis, awesome feel to carving, etc... ) skaters and surfers wanted to board on snow. Its as simple as that.
The first snowboard was originally made by Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan when he bolted two skis together for his children to slide downhill sideways on. This soon became the Snurfer, which is widely accepted as the first commercial snowboard. It is also rumored that Jake Burton (founder of Burton Snowboards) and/or Tom Sims (founder of Sims Snowboards) invented snowboarding with the intent of 'surfing the snow'.
To give the freedom that Skateboarding, Surfing and all board sports give but on Snow!
Sherman Poppen invented the Snowboard
In 1965, Poppen noticed his daughter trying to stand up while riding her sled. He later then decided to create a toy for her by binding together two skis and adding a rope for steering. Poppen's wife created the name by combining the words "snow" and "surfer". It was called the "snurfer"
In 1977, Jake Burton inproved the Snurf board, Burton experimented with a variety of shapes, materials, and designs. Eventually, he created the Snowboard that looks like the boards used today.
